13 February 1998 <br /> AGE-NC Project No 97-0312 <br /> Page 2 of 4 <br /> grid areas are illustrated on Figure 3 <br /> 23 MONITORING WELL PURGE PROCEDURES <br /> On 15 December 1997, a Solinst water level meter was used to measure the depth to ground water <br /> in five monitoring wells at the site relative to the tops of the well casings The depth to water was <br /> also measured in three monitoring wells installed for an unrelated investigation at the northern <br /> portion of the property (SI-1, SI-2 and SI-3) The groundwater elevation in each well and hydraulic <br /> gradient were deteimined from these data(Table 2) <br /> After measuring ground water depths monitoring wells UST-2 through UST-5 were purged using <br /> a Grundfos submersible purge pump Approximately 5 to 10 gallons of water were removed from <br /> each well (a minimum of three well volumes for each well) Temperature, pH and conductivity of <br /> purged water were measured at regular intervals during purging Monitor Ing well stabilization data <br /> and field sheets are included in Appendix B Purged water was stored on-site in 55-gallon DOT <br /> drums pending laboratory anal\ses <br /> For the large domestic well a drain valve .,,as opened on the water storage tank The pump was <br /> allowed to cycle on and off seN eial times For the small domestic well, a faucet bet,,veen the well and <br /> the water holding tank was opened to allow the pump to cycle several times <br /> 24 COLLECTION OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES <br /> Water samples weie retrieved from each purged monitoring well using new disposable bailers For <br /> the domestic wells, a sampling port was opened at the well head Samples were collected fiom the <br /> sampling port only while the pump was operating, to assure fresh water was sampled Each sample <br /> ,,Nas transferred into 40-n-il EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0 5 ml of 18% hydrochloric acid <br /> as a preservatn e and one 1-liter amber bottle n ithout preservative The samples were labeled,placed <br /> in a chilled container and transported to MAI The samples were analyzed in accordance %N ith EPA <br /> Methods 5030 and 8015m for TPH-g and TPH-d, in accordance with EPA Method 602/8020 for <br /> BTE&X and MTBE <br /> 3 0.
