21 November 1997
AGE-NC Project No 97-0312
BTE&X were detected at concentrations as high as 8 5 ppm (benzene), 55 ppm (toluene), 35 ppm
(ethylbenzene) and 140 ppm(xylenes). MTBE was detected in three samples collected beneath UST
Nos 5 and 6 at concentrations as high as 17 ppm(T6-17),however confirmation of MTBE in sample
T6-17 by EPA Method 8260 quantified MTBE at a concentration of 1.2 ppm
Several volatile organic compound analytes were detected in soil samples collected from beneath
the USTs by EPA Method 8260 at concentrations as high as 72 ppm Petroleum hydrocarbons were
not detected beneath the west end of UST No 4, tert-butanol was detected beneath UST Nos 5 and
6 at concentrations as high as 6 1 ppm
TPH-g and TPH-d were detected in piping/dispenser samples at concentrations as high as 1,200 ppm
and 16,000 pprn, respectively BTE&X were detected at concentrations as high as 60 ppm(xylenes)
Volatile organic compounds were detected beneath the piping samples at concentrations as high as
8 2 ppm Analytical results of UST and piping/dispenser soil samples are summarized on Tables 1
and 2 The laboratory report (MAI sample Nos 81029-81042) and chain-of-custody forms are
included in Appendix B
4,0. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
Based on the data obtained from the site, AGE concludes the following
Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in samples collected beneath each UST Neither the
vertical nor the horizontal extent of impacted soil has been defined
The lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbons beneath the piping and dispensers area appears
to be extensive However, the vertical extent may be limited due to a hard soil layer
beginning at a depth of approximately four to five feet bsg
Additional site investigation will be required to assess the lateral and vertical extent of
impacted soil
5 0. RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the data obtained from the site, AGE recommends the following
G The excavation should be backfilled and the stockpiled soil should be characterized for
disposal and/or treatment
c Following backfilling of the excavation, a work plan should be prepared to assess the lateral
Advanced GeoEnvironmentaf,Inc
