Cherokee Rd.
Stockton, CA 95215
October 22, 2003
Project No. 1128.2
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The subject property is used for residential purposes and has a tri-plet structure that is
served by city water service and onsite septic tank/leach line system. The system is
constructed of two 1200-gallon septic tanks, set in series, and three parallel leach lines that
are 95 ft long, connected at a distribution box, and run south of the tanks. The two outside
leach lines terminate in drainage pits that are 25 feet deep. The leach line trench and pits
are filled with rock and gravel.
Approximately September 18, 2003, the septic was discovered to contain certain unknown
volatile organic compounds. This condition was found at the time the tank was scheduled
for routine pumpout. A sample was collected from the first compartment of the first tank
and tested for volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds. A number
or chemical compounds were found, including benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene,
dibromochloromethane, certain methylphenol compounds, benzoic acid, and certain
phthalate compounds.
A follow-up sample was collected from the second chamber of the second tank on October
2, 2003. This sample was tested in a similar manner as described above and was found to
contain similar compounds, but at a lower concentration.
On October 17, 2003, Mr. Michael Infurna of SCEHD issued a letter requesting certain
testing work to determine if these chemicals have been released from the septic tanks into
the environment. This work plan presents the detail of the testing work, plus the work that
will be performed for removing the contents of the septic tanks, tank inspection, and content
treatment and disposal.
2.0 PROPOSED INVESTIGATION
2.1 Soil Investigation
To investigate the potential for the chemicals found in the septic tanks to impact the soil
beneath the tanks and leach lines, Geological Technics Inc. proposes the following
