April 26, 1988 AGS Job No. 2005-P
Delta Truck Sales, Stockton, California
Isolation of Excavated Contaminated Soil
Kip Prahl Associates has proposed that the area of the former
impoundment be excavated, using a backhoe or other suitable
excavating equipment, and that the exhumed waste material be
disposed of so that only clean material remains on site. During
excavation, a continuous subjective evaluation will be utilized
to segregate "contaminated" soil from "clean" soil on the basis
of noticeable odor, visible discoloration, moistness, or other
subjective evidence of contamination. A field photoionizing
hydrocarbon vapor detector will be used as an evaluating tool and
may assist in providing additional evidence of the degree of soil
contamination. The respective soil piles will be isolated from
each other pending chemical analyses to verify the levels of
contamination in both piles.
Applied GeoSystems recommends that both soil piles be temporarily
placed on two to three layers of plastic sheeting (Visgine) with
a thickness of approximately 0. 01 inches. The sheets should be
i
laid so that sheet edges overlap by several feet, thus reducing
the likelihood of leachate migration into the soil below the
Piles. The ground below the temporary storage piles should be
smoothed and sharp objects removed to reduce the possibility of
5
A00/led GeoSv_atam_c
