3.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND
This section discusses the site location, site description, project history, and
regional geology and hydrogeology.
3.1 SITE LOCATION
This assessment was conducted in the area of the former UST at the Suburban
Propane facility, located on South Chrisman Road, near the northwest corner of
the intersection of South Chrisman Road and East Eleventh Street, Tracy, San
Joaquin County, California. The drilling location map contained in Appendix A
illustrates the location of the subject investigative area.
3.2 SITE DESCRIPTION
The subject site consists of a relatively flat, rectangular parcel of land, measuring
1.28 acres, which includes one building, asphalt-paved parking areas, and a dirt
and gravel storage area. The building occupies approximately 6,000 square
feet. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Tracy, California 7.5 minute
quadrangle topographic map, dated 1954 and photorevised 1981, shows ground
surface elevation near the site to be approximately 45 feet above mean sea
level.
V
The site is currently used as a propane distribution center and propane tank
maintenance facility. A 500-gallon UST previously operated on the site;
however, this system had been out of operation for approximately twenty years
before its removal.
Figure 1 in Appendix A is a drilling location map illustrating the general layout of
the subject site.
3.3 PROJECT HISTORY
The former UST was located adjacent to the exterior of the south wall of the
building. The 500-gallon tank was removed by All Environmental, Inc. (AEI),
under the supervision of PSI, on October 17, 1994. At that time it was noted that
the UST had several holes. In addition, discolored soil was observed within the
tank pit. Analyzed soil samples taken from the tank pit detected petroleum
hydrocarbons. Groundwater was encountered during the removal and a sheen
was noted, indicating that the groundwater in the vicinity of the tank was
potentially affected.
On November 4, 1994, PSI and AEI returned to the site and overexcavated the
former tankhold. All discolored soil was removed from the east, south, and west
4
V
