Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
SUBJECT: Well Abandonment and Installation Activities—Defense Distribution Depot
San Joaquin (DDJC)-Tracy Site, Tracy, California
Dear Mr. Knoll:
Please find enclosed the permit application(s) and payment for the abandonment of three
injection wells at the DDJC-Tracy Depot, located in Tracy, California. Included in this enclosure
is the plan under which the work will be conducted. In the work plan, you will find a figure
showing the location of the wells and construction diagrams of the injection wells that are to be
abandoned; abandonment activities are summarized below.
Monitoring well installation activities that are included in the enclosed work plan will be
performed under the current well installation permit (#018554) dated 3 March 1999. Well
drilling and installation procedures are included in the work plan.
Injection Well Abandonment
The injection wells will be pressure grouted. A tremie pipe will be inserted into the well and
placed near the bottom of the well. The grout will be placed in lifts, and groundwater removed
from the well, as a result of grout placement, will be collected at the surface and stored for future
disposal. The grout consists of a mixture of 96 pounds of Portland cement, 7 gallons of water,
and approximately 5% bentonite. The total depth of each well is 100 feet, and it is anticipated
that a minimum of 150 gallons of grout will be needed to complete sealing of the well casing.
Each injection well is located inside a 4'x 4' concrete vault. The vaults will be removed through
use of a backhoe or another type of excavating equipment as part of the abandonment activities
and will take place after each well has been grouted to within 5 feet of the ground surface. After
removal of the concrete vaults, the area surrounding the well will be restored to its condition
prior to installation of the well. This will be done by bringing in backfill soil, topsoil, and sod, if
necessary.
Offices woddwide
