The act created a trust fund, known as Superfund, to <br /> investigate and clean up abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Figure 1 is a <br /> graphic that answers the question, "What is Superfund?". Groundwater often flows more slowly than surface <br /> water. Groundwater is the source of 80 percent of the United States' water supply. <br /> Interim Remedial Measure (IRM)--An action which is designed .to prevent immediate <br /> health or environmental risk by exposure to contaminated media. The IRM is usually <br /> followed by a permanent remediation system. <br /> Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL)--The maximum level at which a particular chemical <br /> is allowed to exist in public water supplies.
