PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
a:
JOGI KHANNA M.D.,M.P.H.
Health Officer • •.. P
P.O. Box 2009 • (1601 East Hazelton Avenue) • Stockton, California 95201 qJ0
(209) 468-3400
17,Y/
AUG 2 4 1992
MARSHALL CLOUD
DEFENSE DISTRIBUTION REGION WEST-TRACY
OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
P O BOX 960001
STOCKTON CA 95296-0250
RE: Investigation of Off-Site Contamination of Domestic Wells
In a letter dated November 20, 1991, to Defense Distribution West-Tracy (DDRW-Tracy)
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)
expressed their concern with the confirmation of contamination in off-site domestic drinking
water wells.
Since that time PHS/EHD has been informed that both the Robertson and Rose residences
have been provided with bottled water. PHS/EHD commends DDRW-Tracy for complying
with the requests from the various regulatory agencies that bottled water be provided to both
residences.
In the PHS/EHD letter dated November 20, 1991, a well survey within a mile radius and
sampling of identified wells along Banta Road was recommended. In addition it was advised
that a community awareness forum be scheduled to inform the community of the off-site
activities.
We are aware that California Regional Water Quality Control Board plans to conduct a
"mini" well survey of the wells at the eastern end of the DDRW-Tracy site to help determine
the source(s) of particular volatile organic compound ground water contaminants; however
we are concerned that to date DDRW-Tracy has not conducted the well survey nor held a
community awareness forum. Members of the community have contacted PHS/EHD staff
regarding the status of the DDRW-Tracy investigation and inquired about the scheduling of
a public meeting. DDRW-Tracy should ensure the public is kept informed of the results of
their contaminant investigation. Please notify PHS/EHD when you plan to conduct the
public awareness forum.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health(are xmcn
