1952 to 1968 in the former manmade drainage channel located
in the northern portion of the facility. Sometime between
1968 and 1974, the channel was rerouted to SWMU No. 4 , the
Storm Drainage Pond. The liquid appears to originate from
Buildings 7 and 10; metal cleaning and other industrial
activities have been identified in Building 10. Other
industrial activities occur in the general area which may
also have contributed to liquid in the drainage channel.
Based on this, EPA suggests continued investigation of this
area. Aerial photographic information is insufficient to
provide greater detail on the operation. Investigation
could include trying to locate specific discharge points and
practices used at that time.
3 . Numerous drum storage areas and potential drum storage areas
are evident in nearly all the aerial photographs reviewed.
The EMSL analysis has outlined and expanded many, but not
all of the potential drum storage areas. The July 10, 1982
aerial photograph, for example, shows an open storage area
east of Building 20; it is not marked as a storage area as
are five other storage areas in the 1982 photograph.
One drum storage area was identified (1968 and 1974
photographs) just southwest of Burn Pit #2 (SWMU No. 8)
along the southeastern boundary of DDRW-Tracy. This area
had not been previously identified.
4 . Parallel striations trending WNW-ESE between Burn Pit #2
(SWMU No. 8) and the southeastern facility boundary. These
parallel striations are evident from May 1968 to March 1974 .
After 1974 (1982 to 1987 photographs) , the striations are
not visible although other vehicle-type traffic
disturbances/use of the area can be seen. Possible clearing
for the striation area can be seen in the June 1963 aerial
photograph. Vehicle-type disturbances/use can also be seen
before 1963 .
As suggested by EMSL in its description for the March 1974
photograph "Ground stains noted surrounding this area appear
to have been caused by possible land farming of liquid
wastes into the soil. Like stains are visible in the
southern portion of the facility. All show the same grader
or bulldozer type scarring. " The southern graded areas are
located south of Buildings 6 and 12-14, and at the
southernmost corner south of Building 29 .
Suggested Additional Work
1. Identify the triangular shape located between Buildings 206
and 7 . If appropriate, continue investigation as a
potential contamination area.
2
