3. Previous well monitoring program reports for the Site have acknowledged that
contaminant capture by the groundwater extraction system was incomplete due
to reduced pumping or lack of pumping in some wells. Furthermore, the
reports have acknowledged that regardless of the condition of the well pumps,
limitations in Treatment Plant#2 would prevent the plant from accepting the
full discharge from extraction wells operating at design pumping rates. This
Report does not indicate the current status of operational problems nor whether
any activities were performed to correct system deficiencies. Please revise the
Report to discuss corrective actions conducted during the quarter, if any, in an
effort to improve the operating efficiency of the extraction and treatment
system.
SPECIFIC COMMENTS
1. Figures 2-2 through 2-5: These figures present groundwater level contours in
the four identified stratigraphic horizons. Each figure includes the estimated
capture zone of the groundwater extraction system. However, no chemical
concentrations are indicated on these maps, and the Report does not include
any other plume maps that can be correlated to the groundwater level contour
maps. One purpose of the groundwater extraction system is to capture the
contaminant plume. Without graphic presentations comparing the capture
zones to the current extent of the plume, the effectiveness of the extraction
system in achieving this purpose cannot be evaluated. Please revise the Report
to include plume maps for the four horizons, preferably with superimposed
capture zones.
2. Table 3-1, page 3-2: Table 3-1 indicates that four extraction wells were not
operating during the sampling event due to pump failure. No time frame is
given for when these wells will be returned to operation. Please append Table
3-1 or revise the Report elsewhere to indicate the anticipated schedule for
taking the corrective action that will return these extraction wells to operation.
2. Appendix B, page B-2: This page lists notes on shutdowns and maintenance
for 4th Quarter 2000 Extraction Wells. However, for each month, the list
indicates"Data not available." The report gives no further explanations or
discussion about obtaining this data if it exists. Please revise Appendix B to
explain the lack of available data on 4th Quarter 2000 Extraction Well
2
