18. Table 6.5-1: The table indicates that for EW035AU and EW037AU, no sampling is
proposed in 2001 because the wells are not operating due to poor performance.
Non-operation of a well does not preclude the possibility of sampling the well. Wells can
be sampled by bailer, portable pumps, temporary operation of the installed pumps, or by
other methods. Please provide another rationale for the exclusion of wells EW035AU and
EW037AU from the 2001 sampling plan, or revise the proposed 2001 Sampling Plan to
include these two wells. In addition, please indicate how the performance of these wells
will be improved.
19. Appendix H, Capture Zone Maps, Figures 5.3-1 through 5.34 and Section 5, Pages
5-1 through 5-6: In Figures H-1 through H-12 and 5.3-1 through 5.3-4, capture zone
limits were not consistently drawn around all pumping extraction wells. Please revise the
Figures to show capture zones around all pumping extraction wells or include a legend in
the figures that refers to Table 5.3-4.
In addition, because different extractions wells are operational during different quarters,
the amount of plume capture differs significantly from quarter to quarter. However, no
discussion of these discrepancies is provided in the Section 5 (Extraction System
Performance). For completeness, please revise the Report to include a discussion of the
differences between capture zones depicted for the 3rd quarter of 2000 and those in
Appendix H for the three prior quarters.
20. Appendix H, Figure H-1 and Tables 5.3-3 and 5.34: Figure H-1 indicates that
extraction wells EW040AU through EW044AU were operating. However, these wells
are not listed in Table 5.3-3 and Table 5.3-4 indicates that EW040AU and EW041AU
were not operating. Please resolve this discrepancy.
21. Appendix H, Figures H-1 through H-6: In EPA's comments dated June 19, 2000
regarding the 1999 Annual Monitoring Report, it was stated that future reports focus on
evaluating whether groundwater at wells EW003 and EW004AU will remain within the
capture zone of well EW002AU to ensure that dieldrin-contaminated groundwater will be
captured by the existing extraction system. However, the Report does not address this
issue. Based on Figures H-1 through H-3, groundwater at EW004AU was not captured by
the existing extraction system. In addition, based on Figures H-4 through H-6,
groundwater at EW003 has not always been captured by the extraction system. Please
8
