7 .3 . 1, the selected remedy for VOC contamination in
groundwater was reevaluated and determined to be the most
viable remedy. As result, Remedial Action Objectives in
this ROD address the only remaining chemical of concern in
groundwater, which is dieldrin. "
b. Similarly, Section 7 .3 .3 (Remedial Alternatives) should
explain why remedial alternatives for groundwater are
limited to dieldrin. For example, Section 7 .3 .3 could state
"Remedial alternatives for groundwater contamination in this
ROD are limited to modifications to the existing OU-1 remedy
to address dieldrin contamination. Remedial alternatives
have not been developed for VOC contamination in groundwater
because a reevaluation of existing OU-1 alternatives, as
presented in Section 7.3 . 1, confirms that the selected
remedy for VOC contamination is still preferred. "
C. Section 8.2 . 1.1 (Comparative Analysis of Alternatives) also
provides discussion of why remedial alternatives for
groundwater in this ROD only address dieldrin. However, to
avoid redundancy which could become confusing, it may be
best to move most of the text in Section 8 .2 . 1 . 1 to Section
7.3 . 3 . Then, Section 8 .2 . 1. 1 could refer the reader to
Section 7 .3 .3 for an explanation of why remedial
alternatives for OU-1 groundwater in this ROD only address
dieldrin and not VOC contamination.
d. In Section 9.3 (Selected Remedy for OU-1 Groundwater) , the
first paragraph should briefly summarize the overall
selected remedy for groundwater (VOCs and dieldrin) to be to
consistent with the description of all other selected
remedies in Section 9.
DETAILED COMMENTS
5 . [Table D-2; Section 9.7 .1. 13] Table D-2 in the Declaration
indicates the estimated volume of soil to be excavated for SWMU 4
is 4, 000 cubic yards, while Section 9.7. 1. 1.3 indicates that
volume is 2, 500 cubic yards . Please resolve.
ADDITIONAL GENERAL COMMENTS
6 . [Response to EPA Comment No. G7 of October 15, 1997 on Future
Threats to Groundwater; Section 9. 1.2, page 9-1, and Table 9-2 ,
Performance Monitoring Network] The response to this concern
A-4
