Jim Pinasco
August 15, 1994
Page 2
GENERAL COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Logging of Trenches
The work plan states that one trench will be excavated at
Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) 14 . The Field Sampling Plan
does not state the trench will be logged.
Recommendations
GSU recommends that all trenches excavated during the Phase
II site characterization be logged. The trench log should be
included in the site characterization report.
2 . Standard Operating Procedure and Quality Control
Requirements for Soil Gas Survey
Appendix A states that the standard operating procedures and
analytical quality control requirements for the soil gas survey
will be submitted to Montgomery Watson for review and approval
prior to mobilization of the soil gas subcontractor. Review of
standard operating procedure and quality control requirements
prior to implementing the soil gas survey will help ensure
quality data is obtained by using appropriate techniques
including using gas standards and proper analytical instrument
calibrations.
Recommendations
The standard operating procedures and analytical quality
control requirements for the soil gas survey should be submitted
to Department of Toxic Substances Control for review prior to
conducting the field work.
3 . Use of Centralizers in Monitoring Wells
Appendix A states centralizers will be used for all wells
greater than 50 feet deep. Centralizers ensure the well casing
is centered in the borehole which allows filter pack to be placed
around the entire screen and reduces the potential of bridging of
filter pack and sealant materials placed in the annular space.
MSAI
MS43.0M/10C
