have not yet been defined, the background groundwater quality study
performed at the nearby WRP-1 MBR plant would suggest that these
exceedances are at least partially the result of background groundwater
conditions. While the manganese concentration in well W-1 was the highest
concentration observed in this well, subsequent quarterly sampling results are
needed to determine whether the concentration increase is statistically
significant.
• Nitrate nitrogen concentrations exceeded the interim limitations in three of the
nine Crossroads wells (KMW-3, KMW-4, KMW-6). Because well KMW-6 is
located upgradient of all land application sites and storage ponds, the
exceedances in this well are likely due to background groundwater conditions.
High nitrate concentrations in well KMW-4 existed prior to disposal of recycled
water on Land Application Site 3 as noted in the WDRs. The exceedences in
this well are therefore likely due to background groundwater conditions. The
nitrate concentration in KMW-3 exceeded its previous historical maximum
concentration and was greater than the typical concentrations observed in
samples from this well. If this concentration is confirmed by subsequent
quarterly sampling results, further evaluation of this well will be required to
determine potential causes for this concentration increase.
• Total Kjeldahl nitrogen and ammonia concentrations in the sample from KMW-
• exceeded the interim groundwater limitations. The concentrations of both
constituents were within their historical ranges. Because KMW-6 is located
upgradient of all land application sites and storage ponds, the exceedances at
this well are likely due to background groundwater conditions.
Table 7 provides a detailed comparison of each parameter and constituent to the
interim groundwater limitations. As discussed above, most if not all of the
exceedances are likely the result of background groundwater quality conditions.
However, as recommended by the BPTC Work Plan, further study should be
performed to better understand background groundwater quality so that this
conclusion can be confirmed.
- 15 -
