10 October 1997
AGE NC Project No. 97-0298
Upon sample retrieval, both ends of the second brass sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped
and sealed with tape. Samples were then placed in a chilled container and relinquished to OnSite
Environmental Laboratory, Inc., (OEL) from Fremont, California. Each sample collected was
analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015-M,and for volatile aromatics(benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes:BTE&X)
with methyl-tert-butyl ether(MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8260.
3.2. SOIL LOGGING
Soil was extruded from the remaining brass sleeves and screened for the presence of organic vapor
using an organic vapor meter equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene), and the readings were recorded on the
Boring Logs, included in Appendix A. The soil was described in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (ASTM D-2487).
3.3. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
A grab ground water sample was collected from probe boring P 1 using a Geoprobe water sampling
assembly. Probe rods were extended into ground water, then pulled back to expose a water sampler
screen interval. Ground water was allowed to enter the sampler, and samples were retrieved using
a modified PVC tubing bailer.
The sample was collected in 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing hydrochloric acid for
sample preservation. The sample was placed in a chilled container and was relinquished to OEL. The
water sample was analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline(TPH-g)and for
volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes: BTE&X) in accordance with EPA
method 8260.
4.0. FINDINGS
4.1. STRATIGRAPHY
During the installation of the soil probe borings brown, moist silty clay was encountered at depths
of 5 feet and 10 feet bsg. Silty sand and sandy silt was encountered at 15 feet bsg. Silty sand was
encountered at 20 feet bsg. A dry indurated clay layer was encountered at a depth of 25 feet bsg in
P-1, where silty sand was encountered at 30 feet and 35 feet bsg.
