` s
June 2, 2000 Harding Lawson Associate
50441
Margaret Lagorio, Supervising REHS
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
Page 3 -
{
will be used to transport the'soils in accordance federal; state, and local regulations. Over-excavation will be
guided by subjective observations of soil discoloration and hydrocarbon odors as well as soil screening by a
photo-ionization detector(PID). Confirmation samples collected after over-excavation will-be collected in
locations designated by the PHS/EHD staff or a maximum frequency of one sample for 20 linear feet of y
excavation sidewall. Samples will be collected in clean 6-inch long by 2-inch wide brass sample tubes from
the excavator bucket. The sample tubes will be pounded.into the-soil in the bucket with a rubber mallet.
ANALYTICAL PROGRAM
Confirmation samples will be analyzed in accordance with page 8,Minimum Verification Laboratory
Analysis of the PHS/EHD UST closure application package. The analytical suite will be that for an unknown
fuel and will include the following:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline(TPHg)with EPA Method 8260B,
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel(TPHd)'with'EPA Method 8015M,
• Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and total xylenes(BTEX);and methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE),with
EPA Method 8260B, and
• Total lead with EPA Method 7421-(if detected in UST removal samples).
However, because the USTs have not been used since prior to the early 1940s,HLA requests that the only
required oxygenate analysis will be that for MTBE. As discussed above if detectable concentrations,of the
COCs remain in the confirmation samples, analyses for the soluble fraction of the detected'COCs will be
utilized in along with DLM;to determine if additional over-excavation is required.
 i
t _
REPORTING
The results of the confirmation sampling wiltbe summarized along with other relevant information in the
Closure Report that is to be submitted to the PHS/EHD UST group at the completion ofthe project. An
additional copy of the Closure Report will be,submitted to Site Mitigation Group.
si
