Geosyntec
consultants
Immediately prior to advancing the MIP the detectors will be calibrated using preparedared
standards of toluene to estimate detector response relative to known concentrations
(Geoprobe SOP No. MK3010, included as Appendix A). It should be noted that the
MIP results will not directly yield concentration values; however, the MIP results can
be used to quantify relative concentrations and thereby provide valuable information on
the relative distribution of VOCs within the investigation area. If significant MIP
response is detected near the 40 ft total depth, the MIP will be advanced deeper, if
practicable until a baseline response is observed.
Data from the MIP borings will be used to assess the relative distribution of toluene in
soil and groundwater in the vicinity where .elevated toluene concentrations were
previously reported.
2.2.4 Groundwater Sampling
After completing the CPT and MIP investigations, up to two groundwater samples will
be collected from borings immediately adjacent to each CPT and five of the six MIP
locations. Samples will be collected by advancing hollow CPT rods equipped with a
disposable tip and filter screen to the desired sample depth interval and then retracting
j the rods approximately 2 to 4 feet to expose the screen. Samples will be collected using
a stainless steel bailer. All sampling equipment will be decontaminated before
sampling at each location.
Groundwater samples will be collected into laboratory-supplied sample containers and
labeled with project identification, sample location, analytical parameters, time and date
of sampling, and sample preservative, if any. Groundwater samples will be stored in an
ice-cooled chest, maintained at approximately 4°C, for'transport under standard chain-
of-custody procedures to Curtis & Tompkins Laboratories, of Berkeley, California.
Each groundwater sample will be analyzed for toluene by EPA Method 8260B.
2.2.5 - Quality Assurance/Quality Control
During this investigation the following quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC)
samples will be collected:
• Duplicate samples will be collected at a rate of 10% and blindly submitted to
i
Curtis& Tompkins;
I
Final Work Plan.doe 8 27 June 2012
i
i
