The weight of the soil was determined to be 1.1 kg, which allowed only one
sample & one sample MS each consisting of 500g : 500ml aquifer water to be used in the experiments. The soil was
quickly manually homogenized&soil aliquots prepared for testing.
SAMPLE NOMENCLATURE
INITIAL SOIL: The initial soil was tested for TTLC 25 Metals, TTLC Cr+6 DISTLC Cr+6, VOCs, TPH(g)-MBTEX&
pH.
FINAL SOIL: The same tests were performed on the final soil after 5 days of ozone treatment.
INITIAL WATER: Appropriate preserved containers of the initial water were analyzed for TPH(g)-MBTEX, VOCs&
25 Metals (as `Total Recoverable Metals'). Unpreserved aquifer water was aliquoted & tested for Cr+6, pH, EC, TDS,
alkalinity,ORP&common anions.
FINAL WATER: The same tests were performed on the final water after 5 days of ozone treatment.
MEDIAL WATER: Medial water is water that was collected on Reaction Day 1, Reaction Day 2, & Reaction Day 5
during the course of the ozonation process. This water was tested for Cr+6,03 &pH. The Reaction Day 5 Medial water
is the same as the Final water.
OZONE DEGASSED FRONT & BACK: The outlet of the sample's ozone destroying tube was attached by tygon
tubing to first of two traps in-series each consisting of a vial of non-purgeable organic liquid. The tygon tubing & the
two vials were attached in series by means of stainless steel fittings& tubing. These were in place to assess the extent
that hydrocarbons were removed from the sample by ozone purging rather than by ozone decomposition.
N2 SPARGED SOIL: In order to see the effect of purging alone,we set up a second experiment substituting Nz for
ozone to monitor the target contaminant level. We added lg of soil plus Iml of ground water to a U-shaped sparge
vessel and purged @ 60ml/min.throughout the same period as the ozone purging. DI water was added while purging
due to counter water loss&drying out. The purge efficiency of this configuration is much more effiecient than the 1 L
reaction vessels. This was analyzed after 5 days for TPH(g)-MBTEX&VOCs.
POST-REACTION WATER: After ozonation was stopped the change in 03 &hexachrome were monitored on a daily
► basis. These samples are termed Post-Reaction Water Day 1,2, 3, etc. On the sixth day two soil aliquots were removed
&analyzed for DISTLC&TTLC Cr+6
