APPENDIX D WASTE ABSORPTION AND NEUTRALIZATION
GUIDELINES
Table D-1 Procedures for Absorbing and Neutralizing Releases
Waste
Category Steps to Absorb and/or Neutralize Releases
Explosives 1. Contain the release by surrounding it with absorbent socks or by diking the
—wet perimeter with scoops of loose absorbent material compatible with the substance
released.Begin at the side(s)where flow is most rapid and on side(s)where
release flows toward drains or other conduits to the environment.
2. Cover the release with loose, compatible absorbent material, working from the
perimeter toward the center.Use sufficient quantities to completely cover the
liquid.
3. Allow the release to be completely soaked up by the absorbent material.Using
non-sparking shovels and dustpan, scoop up the absorbent and place it into a
plastic tote or plastic bag.
4. Use wetted absorbent towels to clean surface area. Place towels into plastic tote
or bag.
5. Manage material as explosives-contaminated waste.
Acid 1. Contain the release by surrounding it with absorbent socks or by diking the
perimeter with scoops of loose absorbent material compatible with the substance
released.Begin at the side(s)where flow is most rapid and on side(s)where
release flows toward drains or other conduits to the environment.
2. Cover the release with loose, compatible absorbent material, working from the
perimeter toward the center.Use sufficient quantities to completely cover the
liquid. If neutralization is desired, substitute an acid-neutralizing absorbent.
Carefully stir the absorbent-covered release with a shovel. The mixture changes
color when the acid is neutralized.
3. Contain and absorb very small releases solely with an absorbent sock.
4. When the release is completely soaked up,discard all absorbent material as
hazardous waste. Use a shovel to scoop up the loose absorbent.Use a
chemically resistant broom and dust pan to sweep up absorbent residue.
5. Use wetted absorbent towels or pads to clean surface area until it tests neutral
with pH paper.
LLNL Site 300 Contingency Plan D-2 January 2015
Appendix D,Absorbing,Neutralizing Guidelines
