SMTH
ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES CORPORATION
October 29, 1997
14981
Ms. Mary iVMeays
'San Joaquin County Public Health
Services, Environmental Health Division
-304 E. Weber Street, Third Floor
Stockton, CA 95202
Subject: Workplan for Subsurface Investigation at N&S Irrigation, 215 West Main Street,
Ripon, California
Dear Ms. Meays:
Smith Technology Corporation (acquired by ATC Associates) has prepared this workplan, on
behalf of N&S Irrigation for the performance of a subsurface investigation at the above referenced
site. The purpose of the subsurface investigation is.to determine the vertical and horizontal extent
of soil and groundwater contamination, if any, in the vicinity of the former underground storage
tanks (USTs). This work being done at the direction of San Joaquin County Public Health
Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD). The proposed scope of work includes
obtaining permits, advancing two soil borings, soil and groundwater sampling, laboratory analysis
of selected soil and groundwater samples, and preparing a summary report. The scope of work is
described in detail in the following paragraphs.
SITE LOCATION
The site is located on the north side of West Main Street and the east side of Locust Avenue,
Ripon, California, as shown on Figure I. The location is a residential and commercial area. The
site is currently occupied by N&S Irrigation.
BACKGROUND
In March 1990, one 1,500-gallon unleaded gasoline underground storage tank (UST), one
unleaded gasoline UST of unknown size, and all associated piping and dispensing equipment were
removed and transported off-site. Laboratory analysis of soil samples collected from beneath the
former 1,500-gallon UST location indicated the presence of detectable concentrations total
petroleum hydrocarbons. Discoloration of the soil and a petroleum hydrocarbon odor were noted
in the field. After the tanks were removed, the areas of the former tanks were backfilled.
w:\14981\reports\wkp.doc 1
1260 Graphics Drive Modesto,CA 95351-1502 (209)579-2221 Fax(209)579-2225
Engineering Consulting Remediation • Construction
