(KMEP)
for the KMEP Holt Release Site at 3851 South Whiskey Slough Road west of Holt and
southeast of Trapper Slough (Site).
KMEP owns and operates an underground pipeline connecting Stockton to the San Francisco
Bay Area. In February 1986, KMEP had a release from the pipeline about seven miles west of
Stockton near Holt. KMEP conducted several site investigations and remedial activities at the
Site following the release. These activities included routine groundwater monitoring, bailing of
free product, operation of a groundwater extraction and treatment system (GWETS), and
operation of a soil vapor extraction and treatment system (SUETS). In 2004, KMEP shut down
the GWETS and SVETS in order to conduct a bioremediation pilot study. In 2005, Regional
Water Board approved removal of the aboveground portions of the remediation systems. In
2005 and 2006, KMEP implemented phytoremediation and planted about 240 trees at the
Site. KMEP is using phytoremediation to remove soil contamination that is within the peat
layer.
The Pilot Study Report summaries the three-year bioremediation study that began in 2004.
The objective of the pilot study was to demonstrate that the naturally occurring processes are
sufficient to continue to decrease petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations. Benzene and total
petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations in monitoring wells show stable to slightly
declining trends, except wells N-16 and N-17. N-17 is a former extraction well, and N-16 is
California Environmental Protection Agency
'' Recvcled Paper
