SECTION 4'.YEAR 3 TREE MONITORING RESULTS '
The average heath and vigor score in Year 3 (2009)was 2.5 (Appendix A),slightly higher '
than the 2007 and 2008 ranks of 2.2 and 2.4 (Table 4-1).A score of 2.5 is roughly in between
"medium" and"high" ranks. '
4.3 Area AA ,
Area AA is located adjacent to an area of standing water that was caused by and is now
maintained by a levee break. Because groundwater conditions are high, only trees '
recommended for the lower planting zone were installed (Fremont cottonwood and black
willow). A total of 23 trees were planted in this area.
Year 1 (2007) '
One Fremont cottonwood died in this planting area in 2007.The survivorship rate for this
sub area totaled 96 percent, the second highest of all the planting areas during Year 1 (2008) '
monitoring. The average health and vigor score in 2007 was 2.2,slightly greater than a
"medium" rank.
Year 2 (2008) '
Results of Year 2 (2008) monitoring were almost equivalent to results from Year 1 (2007).
The Fremont cottonwood that died in this planting area during 2007 was not replanted, and '
this tree was also included in the mortality counts for 2008.The survivorship rate for this
sub area was the same as that observed in 2007(96 percent). The total health and vigor
scores in 2008 (51) were very similar to those calculated for 2007 (50). The average health
and vigor score for 2008 was 2.2,the same average score as calculated in 2007. However, the
health and vigor score values for Fremont cottonwood increased slightly and willow
decreased slightly compared to the previous monitoring year. '
Year 3 (2009)
One Fremont cottonwood within this planting area was recorded as dead during Year 3 ,
(2009) monitoring(Appendix A). This tree died in 2007 and was not replanted. Therefore,it
has been included in tree mortality counts in all three monitoring years. No additional trees
(out of a total of 23 planted) died in Year 3 (2009)within this planting area. The Year 3 '
survivorship rate within this planting area is 96 percent. This is the same survivorship value
recorded in previous monitoring years (Table 4-1).
The average health and vigor score for 2009 in this planting area was 2.4,slightly higher '
than the score calculated for Years 1 and 2 (2.2 in both years) (Table 4-2).
4.4 Area B
Planting Area B is composed of lower and middle planting zones (Figures 1-3 and 1-4).
A total of 49 trees were installed in this area. Three tree species (box elder, Fremont
cottonwood, and black willow) were planted according to these zones.
1
44 SAD166749/PANAGON(YEAR3_2009_HOLTTREE_MONITORING_REPORT.DOC)
