EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Two soil borings were drilled in August 2001 to determine whether oil and/or
groundwater are contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons at 10848 Copperopolis Road
in eastern San Joaquin County. The site is the former location of Countryside Market, a
gasoline service station and convenience store that ceased operations in 1993.
One boring was drilled to a depth of 90 feet, encountering groundwater between 85.and
90 feet. Soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals from 15 feet total depth, and a
water sample was also collected. The second boring was drilled to 50 feet. A total of
twelve soil samples from the two borings were submitted for laborat ry analysis.
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in the gasoline range were detected in all eight of the soil
samples from the deep boring and in the water sample. The maximum concentration was
15,000 parts per million at a depth of 50 feet. Hydrocarbons were de ected only in the
deepest sample (50 feet) from the shallow boring. No methyl tertiabutyl ether(MTBE)
was detected in any of the samples. The fact that the two undergro d storage tanks were
reportedly not used during the 1980's or 1990's, and were removed in 1993, accounts for
the'absehce of MTBE. However, the laboratory did report tertiary butyl alcohol (another
gasoline oxygenate) in the water sample.
1
