Higgins, Area Engineer
California Regional Water Quality
Control Board - Central Valley Region
3440 Routier Road
Sacramento, CA 95827-3098
Subject: Recent finding of volatile organic compounds in new LLNL
monitor well W-25N-01 east of Site 300
Dear Mr. Higgins:
Bill McConachie of my staff spoke with Wendy Cohen on August 11
regarding the recently reported analytical results for the first pumped
ground water sample from well W-25N-01. We installed the well as part of
our Site 300 environmental investigations conducted by our Environmental
Restoration Division.
Well W-25N-01 is located about twelve feet east of the southeastern
corner of Site 300 on privately owned, undeveloped land (see the attached
figure). The well is 36 feet deep and is screened from 23 - 36 feet. The water
level is 18.4 feet. The first pumped ground water sample was collected on
July 26, 1988, and analyzed by EPA Method 624 [gas chromatography and
mass spectrometry with a detection limit of one part per billion (ppb)] by an
offsite, State-certified analytical laboratory. The lab reported that the
sample contained 31 ppb trichloroethylene (TCE) and 2 pbb
tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and no other volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Ground water at this well site is not used for d1inking. The drinking water
at Site 300 is obtained from confined ground water 300 to 500 feet below the
ground surface. We monitor the potable water wells on and offsite and have
found them to be free of VOCs.
0
AU0 16 99+0
.ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH
FERMIT/SERVICES
An Equal Opportunity Employer-University of CaHomia-PO Box 808 Livermore,Callomia 94550-Telephone(415)422-1100-Twx 910-386-8339 UCLLL LVMR
