Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
[a
c

Environmental Protection Department
._ ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITY RELATIONS
w ce)
z June 4,2003
CL
Deaf--Veighbor:
The "annual burn" will soon begin at Site 300. This is done every year to prevent fires
from becoming a problem later in the year after the grasses are sun baked. The
firebreaks to contain the burn are now being constructed in anticipation of the right set
of conditions: dry and not too windy.
We only burn on approved fire days, never when the wind is high and conditions
are not right. We never burn at night. And we put the fires out before we leave an
area that has been burnt. Smoke from the resulting fires is monitored. Burris are
stopped if conditions change during the day.
The burn area this year will'be`about the same size as in past years; and the .burn
activities will take about the same amount of time. That's` about 6, workdays of
actual' activity, which can take.'. weeks waiting for the right conditions on
approved fire days. We hope to be complete by mid-June if the weather-,cooperates
but could still be working in July if it doesn't. r '
The bum, will be carefully controlled as'it was in the past. Our fire department will
monitor all activities. The burn will..-be done at different times along the ,site
boundary.in pieces we can contral, starting with our eastern border.
To find out when a burn may be done near your`property, please call the Site,300
Environmental Manager Karen Folks at (925) 423-2367 between'8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
Please call me at (925) 4244026 or e-mail me at heffnerl 0llnl.gov if'you can't
reach:Karen or have a question .about something other than the burn.
Sincerely,
1
H.F.
