Lawrence Livermore ermore National Laboratory
MAY 10 10
AiN CEI
t;7
MAY 20 10
 f99,
Dear Community Member: MV106NMPE's l NLS, hy-PAI rky
lsERVICES
In September 1992, an introductory fact sheet that provided information about
the environmental cleanup being conducted at Site 300 under the federal
Superfund program was distributed to the public. S:
Department of Energy (DOE) and operated by LawrenOce Livermo ete 30 is owned byNational
Laboratory (LLNL).
As described in that fact sheet, DOE/LLNL began investigating the soil and
ground water at Site 300 in 1982. Work has included review of past operations at
the site; geologic mapping of the area; drilling and regular sampling of
monitoring wells; sampling of drinking water wells both on and off the site;
sampling and analysis of site soils; and biological surveys of the plant and animal
life on the site. In addition, DOE/LLNL have begun ground water cleanup in two
portions of the General Services Area of the site. These cleanups have been
described in previous letters.
DOE/LLNL is using the information gathered through the investigations to
prepare a Site-Wide Remedial Investigation (SWRI) report for the regulatory
agencies. The report will describe in detail the nature and extent of
contamination at Site 300 and its potential.effects on the surrounding community.
Information developed in the SWRI will be used to prepare a number of follow-on
documents.
Originally, DOE/LLNL planned to submit a draft SWRI report to the regulatory
agencies in January 1993. However, the preparation of the report has required a
greater effort than previously anticipated, which has caused a delay in the
completion of the report. Through a cooperative effort between DOE/LLNL, U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, California Department of Toxic Substances
Control, and the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board, it has been
determined that DOE/LLNL will submit the draft report to the regulatory agencies
in August 1993. A revised submittal schedule for all related documents is
attached.
LLNL will make the draft available to the public in the information repositories
for Site 300 documents. These repositories are located at the LLNL Visitors'
Center, the Tracy Public Library, and the Stockton Public Library. The draft will
subsequently be revised based on regulatory agency comments. The final report
also will be placed in the information repositories.
An Equai OpportunityEmployer•Universit yof Califomia•P.O.Box 808 Livermore,Califomia 94550•Telephone(415)422-1100•TWX910-386-8339 UCLLL LVMR
