' 2. Determine the vertical and horizontal extent of HE compounds in the HE
Process Area.
' 3. Determine the aquifer characteristics of the water-bearing zones containing
HE.
' Procedure
To complete the remedial investigation of the HE process area, LLNL intends to
' install at least three additional monitoring wells to define the limits of RDX in ground
water. In addition, two monitoring wells installed as part of the remedial investigation
of the B815/GSA TCE study will be used in the HE investigation. The new wells will be
constructed, developed, and hydraulically tested as described previously. Ground water
' will be sampled quarterly and analyzed for HE compounds.
TASK 11 - REMEDIAL ACTION AT THE HIGH EXPLOSIVES PROCESS AREA
' If needed, remedial action at the High Explosives Process Area will begin in
February 1990. A work plan will be prepared at that time.
tTASK 12 - POST COMPLIANCE MONITORING AT PIT 6
Purpose and Rationale
' Between 1964 and 1973, Pit 6 received containerized waste materials which were
generated at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Lawrence Berkeley
' National Laboratory. Following cessation of waste disposal activities at Pit 6 in 1973'
the pit was filled and the site covered by relatively impermeable soil. The site is
presently used as a firearms training and practice range. Hydrogeologic investigations of
' the Pit 6 area were conducted in 1982, 1984, and 1987. Ground water quality in the
shallow aquifer beneath the pit has not been adversely affected by the former disposal
operations. LLNL plans to conduct routine ground water sampling and analysis from the
wells of the Pit 6 monitoring system.
Procedure
' To implement Post Compliance Monitoring of Pit 6, LLNL will install two
additional ground water monitoring wells as recommended by Brown and Caldwell in their
1989 Hydrogeologic Investigation report. A series of wells will be selected to comprise
' the monitoring system at the pit, and the wells will be sampled and analyzed on a
quarterly basis.
TASK 13 - REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION AT PIT 8
' Purpose and Rationale
' The purpose of this task is to complete the remedial investigation of the inactive
Pit 8 area. Three monitoring wells (K8-1, K8-2, and K8-3) monitor ground water quality
upgradient and crossgradient of this inactive pit. During 1987, up to 5 ppb of TCE have
' been detected in well K8-1. By July, 1988, LLNL plans to:
-9-
