' 0 •
' TASK 15 - SITE INSPECTION AT THE B823 AREA
Purpose and Rationale
The purpose of this task is to complete a site inspection of the Building 823 area
by October 1988. While blazing a fire trail southwest of Building 823, a heavy equipment
' operator discovered what he thought may be an old landfill in an area marked by metal
stakes. LLNL's Environmental Protection Department was notified to conduct further
investigations. During October 1987, LLNL conducted a ground magnetic survey of the
area; several points producing a magnetic response were discovered.
' Procedure
' To complete the site inspection, LLNL intends to collect and analyze a sample of
ground water emanating from a spring downgradient from the B823 area. Analyses will
be made for HE compounds, tritium and VOCs. In addition, the surface geology of the
' area will be mapped in anticipation of installing a monitoring well downgradient of the
area. A records search will be conducted to determine if any information exists about
what may have been deposited in the area. Furthermore, soil samples will be collected
from the photo rinse-water discharge area at Building 823 and will be analyzed for
' environmental contaminants.
TASK 16 - REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION/FEASIBILITY STUDY AT THE HIGH
' EXPLOSIVES BURN PIT
Purpose and Rationale
' The purpose of this task is to complete the remedial investigation of the HE Burn
Pit area by June 1988. In preparation for closing the burn pit, LLNL has conducted
investigations of soil, rocks and ground water beneath the burn pit to determine if
' contaminants exist in the subsurface.
Procedure
' To complete the remedial investigation, LLNL intends to compile data from the
previous investigations and submit them to the CRWQCB by July 1988. If required, a
feasibility study for remediation will be prepared by March 1989.
' TASK 17 - CLOSURE OF THE HIGH EXPLOSIVES BURN PIT
' A date for closure of the burn pit is not known at this time. A work plan for
closure will be submitted prior to beginning closure operations.
1
' EPD/87-269
' -11-
