O. Box 2009
Stockton, Ca 95201
Subject: Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report, Tank 834-D1U1 at Building 834
Attached is an Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized Release (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report for tank system 834-D1U1 at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory Site 300.
Underground storage tank 834-D1U1 at Building 834 was a 1000 gallon single-wall
carbon steel tank that supplied diesel fuel to the Building 871 standby generator.
On July 27, 1994, the tank system was closed and the tank was removed from the
ground. The smell of diesel fuel was noted in the excavation in the excavated
materials.
Soil samples were collected within the excavation and from the soil removed from
the excavation and submitted for analyses of diesel fuel (TPH-D) and BTXE. The
collection and preparation of samples was witnessed by Bill Snavely of your office.
We will forward the analytical laboratory's report of the results of analyses when it
becomes available.
Mr. Snavely stated a belief that the evidence of diesel fuel in the soil below the tank
was associated with the previously detected diesel fuel in groundwater in the nearby
monitoring well installed in the shallow perched aquifer in the Building 834 area.
Because the tank system has consistently tested leak tight, the suspected cause of the
contamination is historic tank overfilling.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Richard Henry at
(510) 423-3641.
Sincer
(1-
Susi Jackson, Di 'si n Leader
Operations and Regulatory Affairs
Environmental Protection Department
CSJ:rkh/eam
Attachment
An Equal Opportunity Employer•University of California•=T,.Box 808 Livermore,CA 94551-9900•Telephone(510)422-1100 •Twx 910-386-8339 UC'!L LVMR
