Mr.Michael J.Infurna,Jr.—San Joaquin County Public Healih Services—Environmental Health Division
November 7,2002
letter to Tosco dated July 22, 2002. In order to delineate the vertical component of the
dissolved MtBE plume, GR proposes to install two cone penetrometer (CPT) tests at the
locations shown on Figure 2. The proposed CPT tests will be advanced to a maximum
depth of 125 feet bgs, in an attempt to identify if an aquitard exists below the second
aquifer and if a third aquifer is present below the site. The CPT tests will include
collection of grab groundwater samples from the third aquifer, if identified, or grab
groundwater samples from a deeper portion of the second aquifer. CPT data will be
utilized to determine if wells deeper than 80 feet bgs, as proposed in GR's Work Plan of
July 8, 2002, are necessary. Once the CPT is complete, GR will provide a technical
report to the EHD with the CPT logs and results of grab groundwater sampling, and a
proposal for well construction if determined to be different than the deeper wells GR has
already proposed.
SCHEDULE
GR would like to install the proposed CPT tests by December 20, 2002. Submittal of the
CPT report is anticipated to occur prior to January 30, 2003. Installation of the interim
action remediation system and additional shallow groundwater monitoring wells is
proposed to be completed by December 21, 2002. This proposed schedule is dependent
on EHDs issuance of drilling permits and scheduling of subcontractors, and is subject to
change.
If you have any questions about this letter or its attachments, please feel free to call either
of us at (707) 789-3255.
Sincerely,
Gettler-Ryan Inc.
Jed A.
