California
Dear Mr.Infuma.
During recent tank removal reconstruction and site assessment activities, horizontal collect,M
piping and vertical vadose monitoring wells have been installed on site (Figure 2)for possile
use as a soil vapor collection system. Sort vapor extraction(SVE) is a remediation technique
which involves creating a subsurface vacuum which induces in situ vol:,-ilization of adsorbed
residual gasoline.
IT Corporation intends to conduct a test of this system to determine whether it will be an
effective remedial strategy. The pilot test will be conducted over a 24 to8 hour period. A
vacuum pump will be attached to both the horizontal piping and (possibly)the vertical vadose
wells 'VW-1 and VW-2 (one at a time), while pressure influences in the remaining vadose
(VW-1 or VW-2) and groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1,MW-3 through MW-7) are
monitored. Extracted vapors will be routed through two carbon canisters(in series)prior to
discharge. Influent vapor samples at the beginning, middle, and end of the pilot study will be
collected in tedlar bags and analyzed for total petroleurn hydrocarbons (as gasoline) and
BTEX, A photoionization detector will be used to monitor hydrocarbon conccntratiors
between the canisters and the effluent vapors.
Test results should provide an estimate of the radius of influence for the horizontal and
vertical dotted pipes and an idea of the concentration of hydrocarbons which can be
extracted. Based on these data, a decision can be made as to whether SVE is a viable
remediation alternative.
Regional Office
4585 Pacheco Boulevard•Martinez,California 94553•510-372-9100
F Corporation ss a wholly a med subnd;ary of l:llemahonal TechnalogY Corporatran
