method 8020, and for gasoline oxygenates using EPA method 8260. The results are shown in Table
2.
Samples from KF-1, KF-4, KF-6, and KF-7 continue to be below reporting limits for all analytes.
MTBE continues to be detected in KF-2 at low concentrations (0.85 ppb), but this well is otherwise
free of hydrocarbons.
In the first quarter of 2002, the TPH-g concentration in KF-3 was 280 ppb and the concentration in
KF-5 was 190 ppb. The concentration rose in both wells during the second quarter, when the
remediation system at the Chevron site was inoperative, but the concentrations began to decline
when the system was restarted later in the year. By the end of 2002, the concentration had reached
440 ppb in KF-3 and 280 ppb in KF-3. Apparently this decline has continued, and the laboratory
reported concentrations of 230 ppb and 190 ppb in February. Benzene followed the same pattern as
TPH-g, and other volatile aromatics may have as well. MTBE followed the same pattern in KF-5,
but exhibited the opposite trend in KF-3, rising continuously throughout 2002 and reaching 260 ppb
in February 2003. Two other oxygenates (TBA and TAME)have remained constant in KF-3 during
that time.
5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Hydrocarbon concentrations remain below detection limits in four of the seven wells at the Kwikee
Foods site, and concentrations (except for MTBE in KF-3) continue to decline in the other three.
. Because these trends have now persisted for several quarters, with only occasional (and explicable)
interruptions, it should now be apparent to all observers that remediation is taking place beneath the
site.
We recommend complying with EHD's February 2003 request to continue groundwater monitoring
through the second quarter of 2003, at which time SECOR, Inc. proposes to submit a Site
Conceptual Model report for the Chevron and Kwikee Fvods sites. All wells will be monitored in
the second quarter, but only KF-1,KF-2, KF-3, and KF-5 will be sampled.
4
