2 and KF-3 cannot be reconciled with those from other wells, and these two wells were discounted
as bad data. The calculated elevation in KF-3 is too shallow (-6.20 feet subsea) and the elevation in
MW-2 is much too deep (more than 7 feet subsea).
3.5 Year 6: 2000
Groundwater flow changed completely after installation of the remediation system at the Chevron
site. As the map for December 2000 illustrates (Figure 17), groundwater flow became radial toward
the southeastern corner of the Chevron site. This is a classic cone of depression formed by
groundwater pumping from the Chevron remediation facility. New wells at the Kwikee site (KF-4
through 7) indicate that this cone extended across the entire Kwikee site.
3.6 Year 7: 2001
The circular pattern of the elevation contours in 2000 was replaced with a somewhat more
amorphous shape by November 2001 (Figure 18). A groundwater depression was still present, but
was more linear and trended nearly north-south through the center of the Chevron site. Strong
northeastward and northward gradients were again evident on the west and south sides of that site.
The water table sloped less steeply westward at the Kwikee site.
3.7 Year 8: 2002
The cone of depression was strongly reestablished in the early part of 2002, and the water table was
depressed by about 1 foot at the Chevron site. The depression was almost rectangular and was
located in the east-central portion of the site, directly over the UST cavity (Figure 19), but extended
well beyond the margins of the mapped area.
As shown in Figure 20, the cone of depression relaxed during the second quarter of 2002 and the
static water level rebounded by at least 3 inches (0.25 feet) in most of the Chevron wells in May.
The rise in the water table flattened the gradient there but did not completely eliminate the cone of
depression. At the Kwikee site, however, the water table did not rebound and the depth remained
greater than 9 feet (more than 8 feet subsea). This created an exceptionally strong eastward gradient
from the Chevron site toward the Kwikee site (0.046 ft/ft). This steep slope encircled the Kwikee
site on three sides, producing generally east-northeastward groundwater flow. As explained in the
Second Quarter 2002 Report, the changes that occurred in the depth to groundwater are attributable
to the cessation of the extraction system at the Chevron site. The system was out of operation for
much of the quarter.
Figure 21 shows the elevation of the water table during the most recent monitoring event in
November 2002. Although the groundwater remediation system at the Chevron site was
presumably in operation fairly continuously from May 2002 through November 2002, the
November map bears a greater resemblance to the pre-remediation maps of 1996-1998 than it
does to the syn-remediation maps of 2000 and February and May 2002.
