 Page 3
November 7, 2003
maximum detected concentration was consistently TBA. TBA was first detected at the former
ExxonMobil site in March 2002, which is 7 years after Exxon Mobil sold the property. These facts,
coupled with the recent increases in MTBE and TBA concentrations in VEW3 in 2002 and 2003, the
failed UST tracer test performed at the site in April 2003, and ExxonMobil selling the property 8 years
ago, are sufficient to exclude ExxonMobil from this issue.
During the meeting and in prior communications, the City of Stockton requested technical advice
regarding treatment of the contaminated water currently being stored in aboveground tanks along
Plymouth Road. Based upon the information shared by the City, ExxonMobil's consultant ETIC
Engineering, Inc. estimates that approximately 2,000 pounds of liquid phase carbon would be needed
to treat the MTBE and TBA in the stored water. This calculation is based on the volume of water and
analytical results supplied by the City of Stockton during the meeting. Additional carbon may be
required should more soluble compounds such as ethanol or methanol be found in the water stored in
the tanks.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at 510.547.8196.
Sincerely,
Jennifer C.
