Pilkington North America,hie.
Site Background
First, second, third, and fourth quarter, 2002 quarterly groundwater monitoring activities were conducted
by Condor at the site on February 11, May 14, August 13 and 14, and November 11 and 12, 2002,
respectively. Condor prepared reports for the monitoring events dated April 3, June 27, October 25, 2002
and January 15, 2003. The groundwater gradient estimated during the 2002 groundwater monitoring
events fluctuated from southeast to northeast and was consistent with the range of historical groundwater
gradients estimated for the site since monitoring events was initiated on June 21, 1999.
During the first and second quarter 2002 monitoring events, groundwater samples collected from the
monitor wells and sumps were analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX)
and for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (TEPH) quantified as diesel, kerosene, and motor oil. In
addition, during the first quarter 2002, groundwater samples collected from RW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 for
natural attenuation monitoring were analyzed for total alkalinity, nitrate, sulfate, and ferrous iron. During
the first and second quarter 2002 monitoring events, BTEX and TEPH groundwater sample analytical
results were generally consistent with historical laboratory analytical results. Monitoring of groundwater
samples for natural attenuation parameters was discontinued in the second quarter 2002. Monitoring of
groundwater samples for BTEX was discontinued in the third quarter 2002. During the third and fourth
quarter 2002 monitoring events, groundwater samples collected from the monitor wells and sumps were
analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel (TPH-D), kerosene (TPH-K), and motor
oil (TPH-MO). Groundwater sample analytical results for TPH during the third and fourth quarter 2002
monitoring events were consistent with historical laboratory analytical results.
Results of the monthly skimming were included in the 2002 quarterly groundwater monitoring reports.
Monthly diesel skimming operations continued at RW-2 and RW-4 with an annual recovery of
approximately 20.55 gallons of product and a cumulative product removal total of 35.55 gallons.
First and second quarter 2003 quarterly groundwater monitoring activities were conducted by Condor at
the site on February 10 and 11, and May 12 and 13, 2003, respectively. Condor prepared reports for the
monitoring events dated March 26, and May 12, 2003. The east/southeast groundwater gradient estimated
during the first and second quarter 2003 groundwater monitoring events was consistent with the range of
historical groundwater gradients estimated for the site since monitoring events was initiated on June 21,
1999. Groundwater sample analytical results for TPH during the first and second quarter 2003 monitoring
events were consistent with historical laboratory analytical results.
Monthly diesel skimming operations continued at RW-3 and RW-4. Results of the monthly skimming
were included in the 2003 quarterly groundwater monitoring reports. At the end of the second quarter
2003, a cumulative product removal of 85.2 gallons was estimated for the site.
Third and fourth quarter 2003 quarterly groundwater monitoring activities were conducted by Condor at
the site on August 19 and December 8, 2003, respectively. Condor prepared reports for the monitoring
events dated September 18, 2003 and January 14, 2004. The east/southeast groundwater gradient during
the third and fourth quarter 2003 groundwater monitoring events was consistent with the range of
historical groundwater gradients estimated for the site. TPH-D was detected in the groundwater samples
collected from MW-2 and the SW Sump during the December 8, 2003 monitoring event; this is the first
time TPH-D has been detected in MW-2 since May 24, 2000.
Diesel skimming operations were generally inactive during the third and fourth quarter due to insufficient
groundwater levels in the recovery wells. Free product (approximately 0.5 gallons) was removed from
recovery well RW-6.for the first time on December 8, 2003. Results of the monthly skimming events
