Sample locations are shown -in <br /> Figure 2. <br /> The excavated soils were transported to an open area near the eastern end <br /> of the facility and stockpiled. Because the aeration of contaminated soils <br /> is regulated based on the concentration of hydrocarbons, the material was <br /> left in a large pile and later covered with visqueen pending the analytical <br /> results. The material was divided into three sections, with a composite <br /> sample taken from each section (C-1, C-2 and C-3) . Each section composite <br /> was collected by placing random grab samples into a large Ziplock plastic <br /> bag and mixing thoroughly. The bag was then opened and a brass tube pushed <br /> into the mixed soil . The tubes were immediately sealed and placed in cold <br /> storage as before. <br /> On May 19, 1987, a return visit was made to the site to take water samples <br /> from wells MW-17 and MW-18 located downgradient from the excavation area. <br /> Approximately ten well casing volumes of water were purged from each well <br /> prior to sampling. Samples were taken with a Teflon bailer and placed in <br /> two VOA vials and 1-liter amber bottles. The samples were then kept cold <br /> until delivered to the laboratory later that day. Another visit was also <br /> made, to the site on September 14, 1987 to collect a second set of water <br /> samples. The purpose of this latter sampling effort was, in part, to <br /> comply with the semi-annual sampling requirements stipulated by the county <br /> and to confirm a suspected error in the analytical results of the previous <br /> samples. <br /> With the exception of the recent water samples which were analyzed by <br /> Med-Tox Associates in Pleasant Hill , California, all samples were taken to <br /> Brown and Caldwell Laboratories in Emeryville, California for analysis. <br /> The soil samples from both the excavation and spoils pile were analyzed for <br /> total lead, total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and the aromatics benzene, <br /> toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene (BTEX). The water samples were also <br /> analyzed for TPH and BTEX as well as chlorobenzene and dichlorobenzene. <br /> i <br />
