Libbey Owens Ford Co.-Preliminary Soil and Groundwater Investigation Report
Standby Generator Diesel Supply Line
January 20, 1997 -
Page-3-
more mobile fractions of the diesel fuel (i.e., BTEX) have migrated downward ahead of the main
' plume.
Based on the above described investigation and remedial activities, Ron Rowe of the San
' Joaquin PHS/EHD, in a letter (undated) to Mr. Jon Weiss of LOF, requested that LOF submit a work
plan to conduct an investigation to study the extent of soil and groundwater impacted by the diesel
' release. Condor subsequently prepared and submitted the work plan, dated November S, 1996,
describing methods and procedures for conducting the work documented in this report.
1
3.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION
' 3.1 Site Preparation
Underground utilities located within the proposed work area were identified by LOF prior to
the fieldwork. Drilling permits were obtained from the PHSIEHD for the Geoprobe sampling. Ron
Rowe of the PHS/EHD was notified of the fieldwork schedule at least 48 hours in advance.
I
3.2 Geoprobe Sampling Procedures
The fieldwork included the placement of eleven (11) Geoprobe sampling boreholes at the
locations shown on Figure 3, Appendix A. The Geoprobe borings were advanced by Vironex
' Environmental Services of Foster City, California. A description of the Geoprobe sampling system is
contained in Appendix B of this document. A Condor geologist was on site to direct all sampling
' activities and fieldwork. Prior to commencement of the fieldwork, a tailgate safety meeting was held
and a site-specific Health and Safety Plan discussed with, and presented to, all crew members for their
1 signatures.
' The Geoprobe boreholes were hydraulically advanced using a 2-inch diameter conical bit. The
rods and bit were thoroughly cleaned before each borehole was advanced using laboratory grade, non-
phosphate detergent and hydrocarbon free water and double rinsing with hydrocarbon free water. The
' boreholes were advanced to approximately four (4) feet below the shallow unconfined groundwater
' table, which was encountered at approximately l l feet below the ground surface (bgs).
' CONDOR
