Libbey Owens Ford Co.
Geoprobe Investigation Work Plan
November 5, 1996
Page-3-
polyethylene,
3
t l eth lene liner see Appendix B for a description of the macro core soil sampling system). The
po Y Y ( Pp P
' soil sampling equipment (i.e., core barrel) will be cleaned prior to collecting each sample. The
cleaning procedures will consist of washing the core barrel in a solution of.laboratory-grade, non-
phosphate detergent and hydrocarbon-free water, and double-rinsing with hydrocarbon-free water.
During the sampling, the core barrel will be hydraulically pushed at each 4-foot interval. The
1 core barrel sample will be used for geological logging and for field screening using an organic vapor
analyzer (OVA-FID/PID). Based on the field observations, selected portions of the core barrel liner
' will be cut into 6-inch sections for chemical or geotechnical analyses. The soil will be logged
according to the Unified Soil CIassification System. Drilling logs will contain field observations
' including soil type, estimated moisture content, presence of staining or odor, and field OVA
measurements.
Soil samples will be collected from the capillary fringe and from the upper vadose zone, as
' warranted, for chemical analysis. We anticipate that at least 13 soil samples will be retained for
chemical analysis. Two (2) additional soil samples collected from the vadose zone, will be retained
tfor geotechnical testing. The sample liners selected for analysis will be sealed at the ends with Teflon
tape, capped, tapped, and labeled. The samples retained for chemical analyses will be stored in a
' cooler chilled with ice and delivered within 24 hours of collection, under chain-of-custody procedures,
to GeoAnalytical Laboratories of Modesto, California (see Section 2.3). The samples retained for
' geotechnical testing will be shipped, under chain-of-custody procedures, to Cooper Testing
Laboratories of Mountain View, California (see Section 2.4).
2.2.2 Groundwater Sampling
' Groundwater samples (I sample per borehole) will be collected using the Geoprobe
groundwater sampler. The groundwater sampler is designed to be hydraulically pushed into the
' aquifer from the bottom of a borehole, to collect a groundwater sample from a discrete zone (see
Appendix B for a description of the Geoprobe groundwater sampling system). The sampler utilizes a
' sealed, water-tight, stainless steel sample chamber and PVC screen which is isolated from the
surrounding environment as the sampler is advanced.
