Pringle Avenue, Suite
Wal Woodward Clyde Consultants
.. Walnut Creek,CA 94596-35656 4
415-945-3000
July 8, 1987
8720064A
[05a
rcnnnnr
Mr. Doug Wilson +el " 1987
San Joaquin County Health Department
1601 E. Hazelton Avenue ENVIROMENTAL HEAETM
Stockton, California FERMIT/SERVICES
Dear Mr. Wilson:
In compliance with state and county requirements, this letter has been
prepared and the various application enclosed to request permits for the
installation of five groundwater monitoring wells at the LOF Glass Company
Facility in Lathrop, California. As discussed previously, these well
installations will be conducted in association with an environmental
assessment we are currently preparing of the property to the west and south
of the existing LOF facility. The purpose of the assessment is to evaluate
the possible presence of hazardous materials as a condition of the sale of
the property. The areas have historically been used primarily for
agricultural purposes and, as such, are not anticipated to contain any
hazardous materials resulting from operations at LOF.
The installation and sampling of the five new monitoring wells will
supplement the existing monitoring and water supply wells in an effort to
provide adequate coverage of the sale property. Two of the wells will be
located near the sand ponds along the south east property line while the
other three will be located just to the south of the facility in an ara
where batch dust, cullet and broken windshields were stored. The
approximate well locations are shown in Figure 1.
The new wells will be completed to a depth of 20 feet with the screened
interval extending from 5 feet below grade to completion depth. The wells
will be constructed of 2-inch I.D. , threaded PVC casing with 0.010-inch
factory slotting. An auger rig with 8-inch C.D. hollow stem augers will be
used to install the wells. The annulus around the casing will be packed
with VA sand to 2.0 feet above the screened interval . A 2-foot bentonite
seal will be installed above the sand pack with a neat cement/bentonite
grout used to complete the well to the surface. A lockable steel "stick
up" sleeve will be used to protect and secure the wellhead.
The primary purpose of the wells is to evaluate possible groundwater
contamination although the wells around the process waste storage area will
also be used to sample the soil . Therefore, no soil sampling is proposed
for the two wells adjacent to the sand ponds while soil samples will be
taken in the other three wells at depths of 2, 7 and 12 feet. Following
their completion, the wells will be developed by purging and surging and
Consulting Engineers,Geologists
and Environmental Scientists
Offices in Other Principal Cities _
