LOF has requested that we prepare a plan of investigation
for transmittal to your office for comment prior to initiation of work.
Based on information provided by LOF, it appears that approximately 9,000
gallons of product were lost, some of which penetrated to the shallow
groundwater surface. Of this amount, an estimated 1,000 gallons have been
accounted for by excavation and an additional 1,000 gallons by on-going
pumping from the break point excavation. Shallow trenches cut by LOF
suggest that free product may have migrated moderate distances to the
south and west. The extent of contamination appears to have been
influenced by pumping from a shallow process water well to the west of the
leak point. Pumping from this well has been discontinued pending spill
cleanup.
During our initial survey of the site, electromagnetic measurements
(terrain conductivity) were taken over portions of the area of interest.
While electrical interference (power substation and buried lines)
precluded use of the technique over much of the area, tentative location
of the plume to the south of the leak point was possible. Based on this
information and shallow trenches already cut by LOF, we propose to further
define the location of the groundwater plume and produce information
leading to the development of a remedial plan through the use of a
boring/monitoring well program supplemented by selected water sample
analysis.
Consulting Engineers,Geologists
and Environmental Scientists Q
Offices in Other Principal Cities _
