At least two feet of pea gravel was
encountered duiring the clearing of the top five feet of MW-4R. Unfortunately, the boring log for MW-4R
does not have lithology information and does not indicate the total depth of the pea gravel. Using the
air knife and vacuum to clear to the required five feet bgs, along with overdrilling with the hollow-stem
auger, will likely create a large void under the surrounding concrete as the pea gravel flows into the
j •newly created space. I've attached photos that show what was encountered yesterday.
In order to avoid undercutting and compromising the stability of the surrounding concrete, Stantec
requests a variance to pressure grout MW-4R using the same specifications as for MW-2 and SPV-2. In
1 addition, since the area has already been cleared to approximately 2 feet bgs,Stantec proposes to
create a mushroom cap by overfilling the casing to create a seal in the surrounding excavated area.
The top will then be sealed with concrete to match the surrounding.
Your prompt attention to this matter is appreciated, and please get me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Amanda
Amanda Magee, P.G.
Associate Geologist
Stantec
Phone: (916) 384-0743
Cell: (916) 747-318.1
amanda.magee@sfantec.com
Stantec
The content of this email is the confidential property of Stantec and should not be copied, modified, retransmitted,or used for any purpose except
with Stantec's written authorization. If you are not the intended recipient, please delete all copies and notify us immediately.
Please consider the environment before printing this email.
2
