ORC TECHNICAL BULLETIN # V.9
Oxygen Release Compound, ORC®
Oxygen Barrier Dynamics
An Oxygen Barrier is designed to bioremediate dissolved phase hydrocarbon plumes by
providing oxygen in the form of ORC The barrier consists of a series of wells or trenches
containing ORC, and remediatcon takes place upon the formation of an oxygenated zone
which supports the bioremediation activity
ORC OXYGEN BARRIER
DGsrefrrilMe
x
i
a xe
ORC Soda Ie toe VA
The dynamics of the barrier are governed by the amount of oxygen placed in the wells, in the
form of ORC, and the oxygen release rate Typically, a bamer might consist of 10 wells,
6 feet on center If the wells are 6 inches an diameter, and are loaded with ORC through 10
feet of contaminated saturated zone, the total available oxygen is about 21 kilograms The
oxygen becomes available in equal increments, as it has a zero order release kinetics, and
should last a minimum of 120 days Consequently, about 175 grams per day becomes
available for bioremediation In a highly conservative use ratio of 3 grams of oxygen to 1
gram of BTEX ( in some cases it can be as low a 1 1) we can plan for a daily remediation
rate of about 58 grams of hydrocarbon per day
