Weber Street, Third Floor
Stockton, CA 95202
Subject: Well Destruction Activities
Diamond Walnut Growers
1050 South Diamond Street
Stockton, California
Dear MT. Infuma:
On behalf of Diamond Walnut Growers (DWG), ATC Associates Inc. (ATC) has prepared this letter
documenting activities related to the destruction of the inactive facility supply well (FW) at the
DWG facility located at 1050 South Diamond Street in Stockton, California (Figure 1). The FW
(Figure 2) was no longer in use and its destruction was requested by Ms. Mary Serra of the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board(CRWQCB).
Background Information
In May 2003, ATC conducted an additional subsurface investigation at the site. The investigation
included producing a video log of FW. The well is located within a concrete below-grade vault
below a concrete floor. The vault is rectangular and has dimensions of approximately 5-feet by 5-
feet by 6-feet deep. The well head is mounted flush to the bottom of the vault. The construction
details of the FW, as observed on the video log, indicate that it appeared to be screened in more than
one water-bearing zone and was a potential conduit for migration of groundwater between aquifers.
The total depth of the facility well borehole was observed to be 133 feet below top of casing. The
bottom 25 feet of the borehole was open. Based on observations from the bottom 25 feet of the
boring, the borehole diameter was estimated to be 18 to 24 inches. The well casing was constructed
of steel pipe with a diameter of approximately 1 foot and extended to a depth of 108 feet from the
top of casing. The well was vertically perforated beginning at a depth of 67 feet below top of casing
and extended to the bottom of the casing. DWG indicated that there are no future plans to utilize the
well; therefore, ATC recommended that the FW be properly destroyed. The CRWQCB concurred
with the recommendation to destroy the well.
Destruction Methodology
On June 20, 2005, ATC submitted a well destruction permit and associated fees to the SJCEHD. On
August 1, 2005, Woodward Drilling Company, Inc., lowered a perforating tool (Mills Knife) into the
ENVIRONMENTAL, GEOTECHNICAL AND MATERIALS PROFESSIONALS
