WEISS ASSOCIATES
The results of the Phase I metals and other inorganic analyses are presented In Table 2
The California Department of Health Services (DHS) has established a soluble threshold limit
concentration (STLC) and a total threshold limit concentration (TTLC) for chromium,
' hexavalent chromium, and copper Only the hexavalent chromium concentrations detected in
samples from Vault 8 exceeded these limits No STLC or TTLC has been established for
' sodium, calcium, sulfates, or chloride However, calcium and chloride concentrations in the
samples from Vault 8 exceeded the background concentrations of these compounds The
' background concentrations of sodium and sulfate were not significantly exceeded in any of the
samples The results of these analyses are presented in Table 2
The Phase I investigation results suggest a chemical release from or adjacent to Vaults
1, 6,and 8 Further investigation is needed to characterize the extent of the released chemicals
' beneath these vaults Therefore, the objective of the Phase I1 investigation is to assess the
vertical extent and concentrations of the released chemicals in soil beneath Vaults 1, 6 and 8
' and to characterize the ground water quality downgradient of these vaults
2 3 CURRENT VAULT STATUS
' Between January I and June 1, 1990, DWG discontinued using the underground vaults
and began using new above-ground chemical storage tanks at the site DWG is now in the
' process of closing the underground vaults For the closure, DWG will remove all residual fluids
and solids and decontaminate the vaults Detailed results of this work and a copy of any
' hazardous waste manifests generated for disposal of the residual fluids will be submitted with
the Phase 11 investigation report discussed in Section 3 6 of this work plan
D \ALL\331DWG\331P15E0 WP Page 10
