Soil samples
will be obtained at the depth which exhibits the greatest evidence of petroleum impacted I 0
soil, as determined through field observations. In addition, a grab groundwater sample
will be collected from a temporary well casing in each boring location. If there is no
evidence of petroleum impacted soil at the site, soil samples will be obtained at a depth of
5 feet below ground surface, and no grab groundwater samples will be collected.
As per CPL'S Technical Approach to Site Evaluation and Decision-Making, Old Valley
Pipeline Sites - Central Valley (March 20, 1997; "Consistent Approach"), the soil and
groundwater samples will be analyzed for the following constituents as described below:
• The soil samples will be analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total
xylenes (BTEX) using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8020,
polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using EPA Method 8270 SIM, and total
extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (TEPH) using EPA Method 8015M quantified
against crude oil.
• The groundwater samples will be analyzed for BTEX using EPA Method 8020, PAHs
using Method 8270 SIM, total purgable petroleum hydrocarbons (TPPH) using EPA
Method 8015M quantified against gasoline, and TEPH using EPA Method 8015M
quantified against diesel.
