Analytical
results of three quarters of MW samples were all non-detect (ND) at <0.5 parts per billion (ppb) of
aromatic hydrocarbons as benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene,and xylenes,ND at <50 ppb of Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbon as gasoline (TPH-g), and ND at <1 ppb (ND at <2 ppb for the July 1999
sample from MW-2) of tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME), di-isopropyl ether PIPE), and ethyl
+' tertiary butyl ether (ETBE). However, analytical results of groundwater samples from MW-2 fluctuated
from 1.9 ppb of methyl tert butyl ether(MTBE) in April 1999, to 45 ppb in July 1999, and 1.7 ppb in
October 1999.
In a telephone conversation on January 28,2000,your consultant Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
(AGE) notified San Joaquin County Public Health Services,Environmental Health Division
(PHS/EHD) of your request to reduce the frequency of the MW groundwater sampling and reporting
from a quarterly to a biannual basis. The request is not approved at this time. Quarterly Report-
October 1999 prepared by AGE concluded that "very low concentrations of dissolved MTBE appear to
be present near the area of MW-2, but does not account for the rise of MTBE concentration reported in
Quarterly Report-July 1999. Seasonal fluctuation, local pumping influence, and other factors could
be involved in the large changes of MTBE concentration. PHS/EHD directs continuing monitoring on
a quarterly basis at this time.
PHS/EHD concurs with AGE's recommendation that additional work is required to delineate the
plume northwest and southeast of the former fuel dispenser area and the MTBE plume northeast and
east of MW-2. A well survey must be conducted and all wells within a 2000 foot radius of the site
should be identified and the location shown on a map of the area. Any known construction details of
the wells identified should also be provided. This information should be submitted with the work plan
to PHS/EHD by April 1, 2000. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jeffrey Wong at
(209) 468-0335.
Donna Heran, REHS,Director
Environmental Health Division
Jeffrey Wang, REHS g
Margaret a orio,RET
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit N Supervisor
C: RWQCB, Central Valley Region--Marty Hartzell
c: Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc. - Tim Cuellar
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
