2
' 2.3 Limited Soil Excavation and Sampling
1 Limited excavation activities were conducted on November 14, 2003 in order to remove soils
containing elevated concentrations of TPH-d from sample locations D5,D8 and D9. An estimated
13 cubic yards, 5 cubic yards and 5 cubic yards of soil were excavated from soil sample locations
' D5, D8 and D9, respectively. Excavated soils were transported to, and recycled at, American
Remedial Technologies, a thermal desorption facility in Lynwood, California. Further excavation
activities were prevented due to the presence of product piping and canopy footings(FREY,2004).
Soil samples collected from the base of the excavations at D5 (labeled D5-2)and D9(labeled D9-2)
did not contain concentrations of TPH-g, BTEX or fuel oxygenates. TPH-d was not detected in
sample D9-2 but was detected at a concentration of 28 mg/kg in sample D5-2 (FREY, 2004).
Soil sample D8-2 contained TPH-d and TPH-g at concentrations of 2,000 mg/kg and 26 mg/kg,
respectively. TPH-g, BTEX and fuel oxygenates were not detected in soil sample D8-2 (FREY,
2004). Soil sample results have been summarized in Table 1.
3.0 SITE SETTING
' 3.1 Site Description
The Site is used as a commercial truck leasing and repair facility. The Site is rectangular in shape
' and occupies approximately 4.6 acres of flat land primarily covered with asphalt. One building
which contains truck maintenance service bays, office space and storage space is located in the center
of the Site.
A truck wash and a fuel dispensing area are located south of the maintenance building. A total of
nine fuel dispensers, located on three islands, are manifolded to three USTs. Two USTs contain
' diesel and are of 12,000 gallon and 6,000 gallon capacity. The third UST is of 5,000 gallon capacity
and contains lube oil
' 3.2 Regional Geology
The Site is situated near the center of the Great Valley geomorphic province of California. The
' Great Valley is approximately 400 miles long and 50 miles wide and is bound by the Sierra Nevada
Mountains on the cast and the Coast Ranges on the west. The Great Valley, often referred to as the
Central Valley,is divided into the Sacramento Valley in the north and the larger San Joaquin Valley
to the south. The naming is synonymous to the major river that drains each section. The Site is
located in the San Joaquin Valley(USGS 1991).
