PHS/EHD has the following
comments for your consideration.
The preliminary report included conclusions and recommendations based on geologic interpretation by an
individual not qualified under the California Business and Professions Code. The addendum provided
professional conclusions and recommendations developed by a qualified registered geologist as required.
The report included the results of the initial investigation of soil and groundwater contamination. A total
of eleven soil borings were either drilled or hand augered during which soil samples were collected for
analysis. Three of the eleven were subsequently converted into monitoring wells MW1 - MW3. Soil
contamination was detected in samples collected in all but two borings, HB-5 and HB-1A to the total
depth of 10 feet below grade. Furthermore, groundwater contamination was detected in MW1 and MW2.
Groundwater sampling should be initiated on a quarterly basis until PHS/EHD has been provided with
sufficient information to consider a reduction in the sampling frequency.
PHS/EHD concurs that additional soil and groundwater investigation is necessary in order to determine the
extent of contamination and to develop remedial alternatives. Please submit a work plan by January 15,
1996 to continue the investigation. In addition to the determination of the horizontal extent of soil and
groundwater contamination, the vertical extent will also require investigation, so that the mass of
contamination which may require remediation can be estimated.
If you have any questions or wish to schedule a meeting to discuss further investigation, please contact
Mary Meays at (209)468-0337.
Donna Henan, REHS, Director
Health
Environmental Health Division
--kK--7vza-z-60
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Diane M.
