' 2.2 SOIL /WATER SAMPLING AND DECONTAMINATION
The sampling of the soil will be completed under the established protocol guidelines in federal
EPA standard 846.
' During the collection of soil and water samples the following tasks are completed:
SOIL
2.2.1 All of the drive rods, handles, stainless steel auger bits and driven core samplers
are cleaned with alconox soap and then hot water rinsed in clean water.
2.2.2 New and clean nitrile gloves are worn during all of the sample collection.
2.2.3 New brass soil sample tubes are installed into the stainless steel core sampler for
every sampling event.
2.2.4 The drive sampler is then driven into the undisturbed soil with a slide hammer and
forwarded to a predetermined depth were the sample tube is fully packed.
2.2.5 The drive sampler is then removed and the core sampler tip removed.
2.2.6 The drive sampler is then opened and the brass sleeve with the undisturbed soil
core is removed.
2.2.7 A Teflon tape seal is applied to each end of the brass tube, a plastic cap is applied
over the ends and then the caps are taped on with duct tape for a complete seal.
2.2.8 The tube is now labeled with site name, sample location, sample depth, date, time
and analysis requested.
2.2.9 A Chain-of-Custody is now initiated for all samples collected. As each sample is
collected it is entered into this document.
2.2.10 The sample is now placed into a chilled ice chest, packed with blue ice and ice.
The goal is to maintain a constant temperature of 4 degrees Celsius.
2.2.11 Now the sampling equipment used to complete the previous tasks will be
decontaminated and the last eleven routines will be repeated at the next sample
point.
2.2.12 The soil samples collected will be stored in the ice chest (in the field) or a
refrigerator (at the office) until shipped or delivered to the laboratory under the
Chain-of-Custody.
WATER
2.2.13 All water samples collected will be with a new and clean disposable bailer. The
bailer will be dipped into the excavation via a extendable pole.
2.2.14 Each sample will then be decanted into the appropriate sample container with the
necessary preservatives. The sample will be transferred in a manner as to not
oxygenate or agitate the water while filling the sample containers.
2.2.15 The sample bottles would now be labeled with site name, sample location, sample
depth, date, time and analysis requested
2.2.16 A Chain-of-Custody is now initiated for all samples collected. As each sample is
collected it is entered into this document.
DEL-TECH Page 5 8/15/00
