• SLOR INTERNATIONAL INCORPORATED
w Secorcom
SECOR
DATA MANIPULATION AND CALCULATIONS
The concentration of KMn04 in the sample is determined from the UV-vis analysis. Multiply the
observed concentration by the dilution factor to get the sample concentration. Subtract the
solution concentration from the initial concentration (3.95 g/L or 3950 mg/L) and multiply the
total volume used per sample (10 mL or 0.10 L according to the method above) times the
difference. Plot the loss of KMn04 mass versus time sampled to evaluate the rate of oxidant
demand. The oxidant demand is reported in grams of oxidant per kilogram per day.
Sample calculation: (UNITS ARE IN BOLD)
0.152 ' (([initial conc. - mg/L]—[sample conc.- mg/L]) ' (volume in VOA - L))/ ((time - days)
(dry soil mass- kg))
= SOXD- MG 02/(KG SOIL' DAY)
The term 0.152 is the conversion factor to convert equivalents of potassium permanganate to
equivalents of oxygen. If chemical oxidation is required and the mass of permanganate
required to treat a soil is desired, then the 0.152 factor can be left out and the results will be
reported in milligrams of potassium permanganate per kilogram soil day.
7
